Why Being Single Sucks: Reason #412

I will be moving in a little over a month. This doesn’t sound like a big deal until I say, “for the fifth time in less than four years.” A brief outline of my habitation history in Birmingham:

2005 – Get a job, need a place to stay. Move in with two girls from Tuscaloosa in an apartment 7 miles away from my job. After six months of it taking forty-five minutes for me to get home from work, I was a basket case. Traffic does not suit me, and neither do giant apartment complexes in the suburbs.

2006 – Move in with old college roommate. She gets engaged, we move out.

2007 – Move into an apartment in Highland with someone I don’t know. She is completely crazy. An opening becomes available in a house with friends and I jump at the chance like a fat kid at the Chinese buffet.

June 2008 – Move into the house with friends. One roommate is engaged by Thanksgiving, will move out by March 31. Other roommate wants to live alone.

That brings us to today: February 10, 2009. My next living arrangement can’t start until May, which leaves a one-month window of time where I have to find both a place to stay and a place to store all of my crap. Why? Because people get married and leases get cut short and people bail on you and then you’re stuck. Sure, things have always worked out. But I really just want to either make enough money to rent a one-bedroom apartment (after three years with the same company I still don’t make enough to support myself) or have a permanent roommate (i.e., husband). I’m so tired of my life being determined by other people’s decisions.

Ok. Rant, over.

Sigh.
